"Hit 'em in the bread basket" has always meant to hit someone in the gut/stomach, so bread basket means the front, not the back as Charlie told Alan.
Charlie answers the phone without checking the caller ID first, breaking one of his cardinal rules that he taught Jake in the past, that by checking the caller ID first, you could avoid talking to Mom or an upset ex-girlfriend.
