During the chase flight, Col. Gallagher's P-51 changes several times. Initially it is an early P-51B (the national insignia on the fuselage had a red surround to the star and bar, something that was only authorized for two months during 1943). In all close ups it is a P-51D with the so called bubble canopy. Later it becomes a P-51A which had the clearly visible carburetor intake above the nose. When seen with a striped spinner, an A-36A with four 20mm cannons in the wing are seen.
