Solo Savage
cbmd-3735219 February 2023
This episode has General Savage alone in trouble , facing 2 enemies, a German pilot and a cynical Englishwomen. This episode was written by Don Sanford, who also wrote a similar episode where Savage was alone and in trouble in France. The setup is a little artificial, a secret change in plans only Savage knows, he's driving himself instead of the usual sergeant as driver despite Nazi air raids. There are none of the wonderful flying scenes, but there is plenty of action. The excellent acting alone is reason to watch. The scenes with Savage and Crowe always ring true, their was real chemistry there. Lansing gives his usual intense performance. The hysterical woman bit was ridiculous, as a woman with long history of use and abuse by men, it was really out of character. But is was well acted. Fritz Weaver as the German pilot was very effective, especially since it was not long after his movie premier in Failsafe, as an American officer who breaks down under the strain.

Hit her again, General!!
planktonrules11 August 2021
When the episode begins, General Savage is annoyed to hear he has to go to a meeting....and the meeting is off base. However, on the way there, there is a bombing raid and he's nearly killed...and his car is hit. A man comes to help...as, oddly, a woman just stands there and seems bored by everything. Despite this, the General insists he go with her to her home to make a phone call to let folks know where he is.

When they get to her house, the bombing raid intensifies and instead of going to get shelter, the woman begins screaming and running about like an idiot. She even tries to run outside...and the General is forced to deck her and drag her to safety in her basement.

When they emerge, they are surprised to see a visitor. This man is a German....and his plane was evidently shot down. Now he holds them prisoner...all during which the woman (Glynnis Johns) insists that she couldn't care less if the German or American is killed....and she'll do nothing to help either way.

The bored rich woman role seemed WAY overdone here. While I am sure a few folks in England might have been less than 100% patriotic, to have one this nasty, self-absorbed and ambivalent seems more than just strange...it seems a bit ridiculous. Perhaps I am wrong, but all this just made the episode seem a bit silly. Not one of the better episodes despite some good acting by some of the actors.
