***SPOILERS*** Straight from federal file #4286 the story of a man Jean Brielle, Ben Wright, haunted by his past in WWII that resulted in 11 of his fellow concentration camp inmates being gun down by the Nazis during a failed escape attempt back in 1944. We get the story from the Chief, Walter Greaza, who lets us in on the reason that Brielle situation is not of his own making but the person who's trying to manipulate him in breaking the Neutrality Act in shipping aircraft parts, like jet engines, to a country behind, take you pick, the Iron Curtain. Thinking that he's doing a legit job as a sales representative for what turned out to be a false front toy company in Paris Brielle later finds out that he's been suckered into working against his country's best interest by sleazy and undercover arms dealer Sidney Tyler,Louis Jean Heydt. It's Tyler who's using Brielle to make big bucks for himself and thus leaving him out to dry when the Feds get wind of his, breaking the Neutrality Act, actions.
It's US Government Agent Fremont, Russ Conway, who smells a rat in all this and has Brielle put under surveillance and finds out the guy is just a pasty being used by Tyler who's now in hot water with his commie associates in having blown the whole rotten deal with them. Caught with his pants down Tyler in order to save his behind rats out the totally innocent as well as confused Brielle as not only being the one behind the scheme of selling goods to the enemy but being responsible for the deaths of his fellow allied POWS back in WWII.
***SPOILERS*** We soon find out just what Tyler was all about in his dealing with Brielle in that it was him, who was also a POW of the Nazis, not Brielle who ratted out the man that Brielle was accused of sending to their deaths! And used the fact that Breille in thinking he was the one who betrayed them fell right into his trap of, by giving him a job, going along with him. Brielle now totally exonerated of the crime of breaking the Neutrality Act-By selling out his country- as well as being responsible for the deaths of his fellow POWS by the Nazis can go on with his once shattered life now intact. As for Tyler he got hit with a three year sentence behind bars which was a lot more humane then the suffering and deaths he caused for his victims.
