At the Mesa City stagecoach stop Jim Hardie and the Wells Fargo agent, Dave, are eyeing an attractive woman on the stage that has stopped there. Hardie decides to ask the woman if she would like to dismount but then notices she is in handcuffs. The San Francisco detective Pete Gerson is accompanying her. He decides to step out of the stage and then notices a couple of men watching him. He goes to Hardie and Tom telling them he wants to consign his prisoner to Wells Fargo for the trip to San Francisco. Tom is skeptical but Hardie says Wells Fargo will take on the job. Gerson decides he will accompany them. One of the men comes over and shoots Gerson killing him while Hardie wounds the shooter. Hardie rides his own horse to accompany the stage holding the future witness - minus handcuffs. Men are following them so at the next stop, Hardie takes his "package" with him on foot to meet with the stage later but can he lose the men following them?
