Sad, moving, poignant.

That's the perfect example of what can TV shows can bring from time to time, in terms of acting and directing, as excellent as any long length feature. Rod Steiger is outstanding here, as a poor bulldozer driver who loses his job and then gets awry. This kind of topic could fit any time, to any period, even now, in 2020/ This is a real sad and gripping little tale, which reach its peak in the scene where his wife tells him that no matter he behaves, no matter he is a he man, a strong and very male or better or worse than the others, she loves him for what he is. This dialogue scene overwhelmed me. And the very ending is the most brilliant nut also painful that you could imagine. Among the best of this series; at least if I consider those I have seen.

Intriguing TV drama

Celebrity director Lewis Milestone saw out his career doing TV episodes and this one is quite impressive. It pairs him with the then trendy talent of Rod Steiger, which would be expected to be a mis-match but actually functions quite well.

The piece pivots on the antagonism between gruff bulldozer driver Steiger and quieter company supervisor Beal. The performances are strong, show casing Steiger to effect. Production values are better than usual for film TV and the surprise is that it's possible to see the director of ALL QUIET.. and THE RACKET in this one, with the adjacent caravans giving a chance to frame the characters in windows and doorways.
