Jack Kelly before Maverick

Warning: Spoilers
Jailbreak at Tonopah - 1956 This one is an episode from the 1956-59 series, STATE TROOPER. It ran for a total of 104 episodes and starred Rod Cameron as a detective with the Nevada State Patrol.

In a pre- MAVERICK role, Jack Kelly plays a bank robber from the east hiding out in Nevada. He stashed the quarter million and has been laying low with his wife, K.T. Stevens for the past year.

They have been acting like tourists hitting all the Nevada spots. What Kelly does not know, is that Steven is only sticking with him till he recovers the loot, or tells her where it is. She has been making plans with one of Kelly's fellow hold-up men, Robert Bice, to split the cash.

Kelly foolishly gets himself arrested on a hidden weapons charge. He dropped his .38 in a café where State Trooper, Rod Cameron and local Sheriff, Alex Campbell, were eating. He gets 30 days in lock-up for carrying a weapon without a licence.

Kelly starts to lose his cool once locked up. Stevens is afraid that Kelly might spill the cash location in order to get out. She and Bice hatch a plan to free Kelly.

Several nights later, Bice takes a bulldozer and cracks open the wall of Kelly's cell. Bice shoots and wounds the night watchman but is killed by return fire from a just arrived Cameron. Kelly is recaptured and locked up again.

Stevens figures that Kelly is now gone for several years and pays him a visit at the jail house. There she tries to slip him some poison. If she can't have the cash then nobody can. Cameron spots the play and Miss Stevens is busted.

Not great, not bad, just an average police drama from the era. (b/w)
