I get the feeling that this show was written to be the first of the series, and not the eighth. The opening scene of Hutch in the driver's seat of Starsky's car, with Starsky encouraging Hutch to start it up and rev the engine, gives the impression that Hutch has never driven Starsky's car before, or even been in it. Like it's a new car for both of them. So this is a curious scene, considering they've been using the car for the first seven episodes already. If this had been Episode 1, it would make more sense (but not even completely then, because it's the same car from the pilot, too).
The whole show feels like we are just getting to know the characters. When a friend of Huggy's accidentally steals money from the mob, he turns to Huggy to mediate its return. At the same time, Starsky and Hutch are trying to track the theft and the thief. When the thief's car turns up behind Huggy's place, Starsky and Hutch approach Huggy for help and answers. And Huggy tells them nothing. There are more curious feelings from these conversations that these characters don't completely know or trust each other yet. At one point, Starsky and Hutch consider if Huggy himself was in on the theft! So it feels like this might have been written before the show had really aired, and it should have been the very first episode.
Huggy now tries to get the money back to the mob, but someone else who knows Huggy has the money ambushes Huggy and steals it from him. Now Huggy is on the hook with the mob boss for the money. At last, he turns to Starsky and Hutch to help get him out of this mess.
Despite some of the disconnect in the story and dialog, considering we already do know these characters, it's still a good episode. Starsky and Hutch have a lot to do in tracking down the missing money and helping Huggy get out of the trouble that he is in. They have a lot of information they have to sort and figure out, and that gives PMG and DS quite a lot of good dialog. If this had been the introduction to these characters, it would have been a favorable one. It's actually better than the show that was the premier episode. They take care of their friend, figure out the scam, and deal with the bad guys. It's everything I want in a good Starsky and Hutch episode.
