Maya is transformed into a caterpillar, and villainess Carolyn Powell places a small jar over it to suffocates her, and after just a few minutes it starts to work - but they are adapted to living underground without much oxygen, so they may only "breathe" every few hours. Caterpillars have sets of spiracles alongside either side of the body, which allow oxygen to pass through tubes called tracheoles directly to the body cells. This is much more efficient than lungs and blood at passing oxygen.

It's been said in past episodes that Maya can hold her transformed state for an hour. When Sally places the plastic cover over her in caterpillar form, Tony says that she'll suffocate. Within an hour Maya would transform back and the plastic cover would just fall off her.
