Even more topical today than then
WeAreBrainPolice2 March 2022
South Park has succeeded for so long with, among other reasons, its scathing social commentary. In this episode, it challenges the notion that you can be whatever you "identify" as. Many people will be disgusted by the live action surgery scene-and that really was the point. The mutilation and ever increasing absurdity of characters' transformations were designed to be off putting. But in it all, there was a valuable message: learn to love ourselves for who we are. Of course, South Park does not present that in as pleasant of a way as I have. The jokes, as with many other episodes, are not for everyone, and that is ok.

How People Thought About Sex Changes Before PC Culture
raysfan-7421720 February 2017
This episode is definitely bizarre and a little shocking, and possibly the most nauseating South Park episode I have seen; that said, the jokes are as funny as ever and it is interesting to see how significantly the public perception of sex change operations has changed. I'd tend to doubt this episode would be allowed to air today. If you can avoid being offended, Mr Garrison's Fancy New Vagina will certainly keep you entertained.

Funny episode with a very disgusting scene
gangstahippie27 January 2009
Warning: Spoilers
This episode shows Mr.Garrison getting a sex change operation, and becoming Mrs.Garrison.He would be a woman until the Season 12 episode "Eek A Penis" where he turns back into a man.He also becomes a lesbian in the Season 11 episode "D-Yikes".The episode contains a very disgusting scene of Mr.Garrison's sex change which is real archive footage of an actual sex change being shown.Probably one of the most sickening scenes in South Park. After he becomes a woman, he feels happier, however his boyfriend Mr.Slave leaves him and he then finds out that he cannot have a period or get pregnant.Meanwhile, Kyle is not qualified for the basketball team because "jews can't play ball".So he goes to the doctor that changed Garrison and asks to be a tall black man.Kyle's dad Gerald goes to complain and then he becomes a dolphin. The doctor used Garrison's old body parts for Kyle and Gerald, however if Kyle plays basketball, his kneecaps(which are Garrison's balls) will explode.Garrison wants to be a man again so he must go find Kyle before it's too late! This is a fairly good South Park episode with funny moments.

One of the best eps

Weird strange and apologetic. I've seen this Ep way back when it was released but just reminded of it when it aired today. This is the type of stuff we need today. It reminds you of the time before woke culture. It highlights what slot of people are scared to say and says it with force. Recommended

Tolerable

Warning: Spoilers
Despite this being considered the worst episode, I didn't think it was that bad. Yes it does have disgusting moments but I find them more weird than anything. Gerald as a dolphin was odd, but because I laugh at gross-out humor sometimes, I was able to laugh at that. However I completely understand if you don't like it

Controversial in the 20s
antonvinther26 November 2023
Watched this when I was 10, watched it again in my early 20s, still disturbed.

The episode shows the brutal realities of going through sex change surgeries unapologetically. Obviously controversial for the current times, but still ask questions about sex change surgeries nature, which still reign true.

I do not think Matt and Trey are transphobic, by simply showing off the procedure and using perspectivation to transracial and trans species psychology, which are real real phenomenon.

For critics i think it would be more constructive to try and tackle something specificly transphobic, instead of something seeming transphobic, or apparently being transphobic through some bigger, or meta lens, because truly I don't think Trey or Matt cares what you do as an adult in 2020's, and forward.

My least favourite episode
jolinaschmer6 August 2018
This is by far my least favourite episode. It really is out of character for Kyle, unpleasant to watch, disgusting, nut funny at all and hasn't the smart charme of the South Park I know

The dangers of satire
sukonetei19 June 2022
When I was 12-19 years old I thought this episode was funny. After to coming to terms with being trans at 20 and looking back on this episode I realize that this episode is actually kind of traumatic for me. Growing up as a boy, I always wished I could magically become a girl or that I was just born as a girl in the first place. I didn't however want to transition and become "a freak". The opening scene with the vaginoplasty is absolutely tasteless. Them using footage of a real life vaginoplasty alongside the irreverent dialogue not only disgusted me but made me disgusted with the idea of being transgender. Then on top of that they compare gender transition to being trans racial and being trans species, which instills the idea in the viewer that being trans anything is ridiculous. You could argue "oh it's just an edgy joke" but at some point a joke has gone too far and is spreading genuine hate. Literally the message of this episode is that transgender people are a joke and the idea of being transgender is ridiculous. I lived most of my life as a hateful, bigoted male because I was basically told that if I tried to be my true self I would be a freak and be seen as little more than a joke.

There's a few good notes, but oh god
egunderson2424 April 2019
This definitely has one of the worst scenes in The show's history. Mr. Garrison wanting to be a woman is believable enough in itself, and there are a few decent jokes, but the episode is seriously weighed down by the imagery. The sex change scenes are nauseating and the scene where Kyle's knees explode is not immune either. I'm just glad I knew about the imagery before I watched the episode, but it was still awful to watch. It does have a few interesting ideas, but they don't get explored outside of a few jokes relating to the topics at hand. Anyone squeamish should definitely skip this one.

A weak unpleasant mess!
banjolover13 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I think many of us can agree on this one, but this was a terrible terrible episode. ALSO if you have a weak stomach, DO NOT watch the live action surgery scene that comes early in the episode, it's gruesome. Mr Garrison gets a sex change. Any plots alone in animated sitcoms involving this plot are bound to be bad. So avoid this one while you can, also I can't bear the scene where Kyle's kneecaps burst. Kyle by the way wants to play alongside his favourite basketball team, but he's not tall enough.

Also, Gerald becomes a dolphin and that's pretty much the whole episode. Skip it while you can. It's a disastrous episode. Not one of South Park's greatest unfortunately.

Why
edisaperson26 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Season 9, a pretty good season, pretty nice episodes but my GOD this episode. What a god damn way to start a season. The episode barely makes me smirk once. I could get more enjoyment from watching everyone I love die. The satire (if it can be called that) downright misses the mark by lightyears. I mean, dolphiplasty? Seriously?? They act like changing gender is similar to changing your species. Not even mentioning the surgery scene, this kind of gross out wont even fit in disaster movie. Yeah. Not even spoof film worthy. But all of this can never EVER compare to the "moral" of the episode. After all the mockery and constant kicking down you know what they did? THEY DOUBLED DOWN. When I thought they would get serious and reason with trans identity and how they should be respected but they double down on it.

This episode started the disgrace of a character arc for mr garrison which ends after he "realizes that he made a mistake" Even though this somehow got made, I think matt and trey had made up for it with "the cissy" in 2014. However they ruined it with board girls, which I still don't see redemption for.

How was this even made and how wasn't it scrapped.
