The freaks' public service announcement is a parody of the famous "Look for the Union Label" commercial made by International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union in the 1970s.
Among the Freaks in the crowd are Mrs. Thompson, Rocky Dennis, Sloth from the Goonies, Greedo from Star Wars and Nurse Gollum.
After the "freaks" interrupt The Maury Povich show with a union ad, a man wearing a blue shirt looks up from an eye viewer to tell Maury that his ratings have begun falling. This man's appearance, as well as his clothing and the viewer equipment he is using is a clear homage to Mr. Spock from the original Star Trek series. Trey Parker and Matt Stone are fans of Star Trek and frequently reference it in their shows and films.
Origin of Cartman's catchphrase "Whatever! I do what I want!"
In the green room of the Maury show, the freaks mention another famous freak called "Lobster Boy". This is a reference to Grady Stiles, Jr. (1937-1992) who suffered from the genetic condition ectrodactyly where his fingers and toes were fused to form claw-like extremities.
