The "Moe Green special' is a reference to The Godfather (1972), where the character Moe Green is shot through the eye.

First appearance of John Heard as corrupt detective Vin Makazian. Heard would appear in four more episodes and be nominated for an Emmy award for his work on the show.

The song played during the ending credits is "Look on Down From the Bridge" by Mazzy Star.

Michael Buscemi appears in this episode as Lewis Pantowski. His brother Steve Buscemi joins the cast of The Sopranos in season 5 as Tony Blundetto the cousin of Tony Soprano and Christopher Moltisanti.

First episode directed by John Patterson, who would go on to helm 13 episodes, for which he received two Emmy nominations. Patterson had met series creator David Chase when they both attended Stanford University in 1970. Patterson died at age 64 of prostate cancer, and a year later in the final season, Kaisha (2006) is dedicated to his memory.
