Final appearance of Maude Flanders, barring occasional dream sequences, flashbacks, or other deviations from the series' regular progress. Maude was killed off because her voice actress Maggie Roswell had quit the series over a salary dispute. Marcia Mitzman Gaven, who took over most of Roswell's series characters, provides the very few lines that Maude speaks in this one, as well as the voices for guest bit-players "Diane" and "Fandemonium girl."
The opening shot of Springfield Cemetery focuses on the headstones of memorable guest stars who were killed off in previous Simpsons seasons.
In the scene where Ned Flanders dates Edna Krabappel you can clearly see a bottle of wine labelled "Chateau Maison" a direct reference to S01E11 "Crepes of Wrath" where Bart participates in an exchange scheme to France.
Words Ned spells out while playing Scrabble by himself: Solitary, Alone, Forever, Horny, and Flanswered.
The video game Billy Graham's Bible Blaster, played by Bart with Rod and Todd Flanders, is a spoof of the unlicensed NES game, Bible Adventures.
