Captain Cosmo Hits the Seas
Samuel-Shovel12 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
In "The Scofflaw", George finds out that a friend (played by the great Jon Lovitz) recently had cancer but only told Jerry and not George. Jerry even bought him a gift card to a hair treatment facility for the chemo. This creates a rift that gets worse when he tells George that he never even had cancer. Kramer is on the hunt for the most infamous "White Whale" parking ticket culprit in New York City. Elaine searches for a rare pair of glasses in order to get back at an ex-boyfriend.

Kramer's whole "Captain Ahab" shtick in this episode is hysterical. I loved the eye patch and outfit; he's marvelous as always. George & Jerry's subplot really works on a dark comedy level as well. I enjoyed how they included George's own baldness into the story arc. Elaine's subplot is fairly bland which kind of keeps this from being a classic but still, a great episode.

Minor Setback
Hitchcoc2 January 2023
Even slightly weaker episodes of Seinfeld were better than most comedies on TV at the time. In this one, a friend tells everyone that he has been battling cancer and everyone knows but George. George wasn't told because he can't keep secrets. He goes to chew the cancer patient out and gets told a secret he must keep to himself. Of course, his inability causes all kind of furor among the regulars. Kramer begins wearing an eye-patch. His loss of depth perception leads to about ten second of amazing physical comedy. Elaine gets in some pretty funny stuff with a former boyfriend. He is an author and there are several fun scenes as the guy tries to sign books for people.

Wayne Knight as Newman
safenoe26 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Wayne Knight, fresh off his starring role with Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct (written by Joe Eszterhas) continue his role as Newman in Seinfeld (thankfully his big screen fame with Sharon Stone didn't lead him to leave Seinfeld for Hollywood just like some ill-fated SNL stars did). Anyway, talking about SNL, Jon Lovitz guest stars in The Scofflaw, and he plays quite a duplicitous character that makes quite an entertaining episode. Kramer helps out to capture the scofflaw, and it's Newman who is the scofflaw much to the surprise of the audience, especially as he is a postal worker who relies on the law.

GOOD FOR YOOU, JACK!

Just want to give the great character actor. Basil Hoffman a shout for doing amazing work in one small scene in the Hair System salon. He goes from 0 to 100 in seconds when defending his company's(and his own) toupee against Jerry's criticisms.

"Newman - the White Whale!"
itamarscomix4 October 2011
Season 6, Episode 13, "The Scofflaw" Seinfeld was probably overdue for a weak episode after getting "The Race", "The Switch" and "The Label Maker" in a row; "The Scofflaw" is the weakest episode in season 6, and one of the weakest in the entire series. Which is not to say it doesn't have its moments, of course.

Kramer has some good moments, especially when interacting with Newman, but nothing that happens to him has any really satisfying conclusion, especially the eye-patch which is kinda cool looking but has no real effect on anything else that happens. Elaine's story makes no sense; the one regarding Jerry, George and Gary Fogel is funnier, but Jon Lovitz is incredibly annoying and unlikable. A filler episode, all around.
