The Germans tell Markham that he will be interrogated. This would make sense if he had been arrested with other men at a location which was a known meeting place for the resistance, but he and the other 19 hostages were all selected at random from a tram and many of the hostages were women and old people. Interrogating all these people would make no sense as they would be unlikely to know anything of use to the Germans.
