Brennan is the president of a large shipping company. He believes that his young wife is unfaithful, that his son despises him, that his fellow directors are plotting against him, and that someone is following him and planning to kill him. Ryan's preliminary investigations convince him that these are the fears of a paranoid mind. But then he learns that Brennan is dead - shot at point blank range with his own revolver. Everything points to suicide, but Ryan isn't so sure. As Ryan sorts out the fact from the fantasy, he discovers that all of Brennan's seemingly hysterical fears are only too well-founded. The wife, the son, the directors all had motives for murder, and now it is Ryan who is being followed by a murderer with nothing to lose.
