Rumpole defends Fiona Allways' sister Jennifer Postern who is accused of murdering her unfaithful husband. She claims it was an accident but admits having shot him. Rumpole consults his colleague, pathologist Dr. Ackerman on the nature of the victims wounds. He's also appearing before Justice Twyburne who many years previously had condemned a man to death, only to have the individual later found to be innocent - but after he had already been executed. At home, Hilda has taken an interest in country living and tries to convince Rumpole of the benefits of country life.
