Rumpole and the Fascist Beast
Prismark1015 November 2023
The ever liberal Rumpole has suddenly taken on a pupil without anyone in chambers knowing about it. He is Latif Khan from India although Latif fancies shows more interest in prosecuting criminals rather than defending them. Some members of the chambers are a little taken aback. They have only just got used to Miss Trant as a female barrister.

Latif also finds himself in a prickly problem. Rumpole is defending Captain Rex Parkin, arrested in a fascist rally for inciting racial violence.

Rumpole takes the case on as a matter of defending the right to free speech. Parkin has ideas, he does not want Rumpole to get him a lighter sentence. He wishes to follow Gandhi into martyrdom.

Plead guilty and get the maximum sentence. A stand for his beliefs or more likely, he is following orders from his fascist party hierarchy.

Made in 1979 where there was a spike in National Front activities. Writer John Mortimer has an interesting take on where free speech ends and hate speech begins.

Rumpole just wants to his best for Captain Parkin although he gently mocks Parkin's war service. Whereas Parkin is really a fall guy. A right winger who might have been brain washed. His party members cared little for him at the end.
