- Tod is alone in St. Louis while Buz is recuperating from echo virus in Mercy Hospital in Cleveland. Working at a gas station, Tod helps a woman, a passenger in a car driven by an older male, escape from the driver, she telling Tod that he is a dangerous mental patient, she his doctor, and that he has taken control of the situation, including having a gun, as she was driving him to his next institution. After she is able to get away in the car by herself, Tod learns that the male driver is really Jackson Harris, a bail bondsman, she, Ellen Barnes, the bail jumper he picked up in Oklahoma City. Tod vows to Harris to locate her so that Harris will not lose his bond. Tod is able to follow her to nearby St. Charles, Missouri. He will eventually learn that St. Charles is her hometown, where she had escaped her repressive life. She was always seen as the worldly one, her older sister Helen O'Brien the staid careful one, the two who do not get along. She has returned this day specifically to attend her niece's wedding, and to show her family of her worldliness and success. They believe that she retired from singing, a job at which she received some renown and made much money. But in reality that career deserted her, she now a stripper, for which she was arrested for lewd behavior. Despite paying for many of the luxuries for the wedding, Ellen is really broke, with just over a dollar to her name. When Tod finds out Ellen's story, he changes his mind about turning her in to Harris, as he can understand her motivations, which are much like his own in wanting to find her place in life. But Harris may have other ideas.—Huggo
