- Tod and Buz's latest jobs, which have a one week guarantee at $75 a week each, has them working for Maximillian Coyne's traveling road "show" in his latest stop, the small town of Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Despite knowing that Max is a hustler, they who met him breaking up a fight where he out-hustled some other hustlers, they take the jobs on one goal: getting girls. Max sets up combination beauty/talent competitions under the banner "Maximillian Coyne's Hollywood Talent Cavalcade" which are open to the young female residents of the town where they set up. The girls sign up for one of three sub-competitions: "Miss Venus" for the traditional beauties, "Miss Sarah Bernhardt" for actresses, or "Miss Cinderella" for those who need a little help in bringing out their inner princess. From those three, one is eventually crowned the overall winner, in this case Miss Carlisle, who receives a paid trip to Hollywood and a speaking part in a major Hollywood movie. Max does have a loose connection at a Hollywood studio, but Max does not care what happens to the girls once they get to the studio, their small part which is destined for the cutting room floor. Part of Max's entourage is his exasperated wife, Caroline Coyne, who would prefer Max settle down in a steady and more legitimate job, even like a talent agent, rather than the traveling cavalcade which is predicated on Max's continual hustling for them to survive. Despite Tod in particular having his choice of any girl he wants as they believe he can give them a leg up in the competitions, Tod sets his eyes on one, Jahala West, a smart but Plain Jane of a woman who needs a little self-esteem to get out of her dead end life as a waitress. As all the competitions are decided solely by an applause meter, Tod thinks he knows how to help Jahala. Through it all, they may all find that hustlers attract hustlers...—Huggo
