Tod and Linc are taking a break from their work at a housing development under construction in Tierra Verde, Florida - Tod as a sales associate, Linc as a construction worker - fishing in a small dinghy, when they are upended by a speeding hydrofoil, which is being followed or is following a small private jet. Tod wants to throttle the driver of the hydrofoil. He changes his mind but is still able to get in his necessary retribution when he sees that the driver is a woman. They will learn that she is a Midge Pierrepont, the pilot Sidney Brookes - so named after her deceased father - two beautiful Chicago heiresses who have known each other and competed against each other their entire lives. Midge's passion is adventure, she who has her entire yearly schedule set, including a hydrofoil race she plans to sponsor in Tierra Verde. Sidney, who is more cutthroat in nature, wants to take over that sponsorship, and has what she believes is a way to resolve who should be that sponsor. Tod and Linc end up being used as pawns in Sidney and Midge's competition. Wiser to the ways of rich girls than his friend, Tod is a little more aware than Linc is, Tod who tries to warn Linc that the attractive on the surface opportunity offered him which would end their travels together is not the answer to the questions he has about where his life should be headed.
