In the 1779 prologue, Captain James Cook's men fight a village of Hawaiians who worship Lono. This is all true history; Cook visited the village twice. The first visit was peaceful, but on the second, quarrels broke out between Cook's men and the natives. Cook was killed and the Hawaiians buried him.
