David Ross returned to the show in the fourth series episode White Hole (1991) as the voice of Talkie Toaster.
The episode originally ended with Kryten being seen leaving Red Dwarf on Lister's spacebike and flying off into space. The ending was filmed, but the broadcast version ended with a freeze frame, when Kryten revs up Lister's spacebike engine. However, the full ending was reinstated for the remastered version.
Kryten returns in the Series III opener Backwards (1989) after apparently crashing Lister's space bike into an asteroid. Between Series II and III, Lister rescues and rebuilds Kryten, and Kryten becomes a permanent main character thereafter.
In the credits of "Androids", the producer and director is named Kylie Gwenlyn. This a reference to Neighbours (1985) cast member Kylie Minogue and the Head of Comedy for the BBC, Gareth Gwenlan.
Initially it had taken David Ross up to eight hours to get into the full Kryten make-up. To make matters worse, Ross suffered from claustrophobia.
