When Lister starts taking off his jacket and hat after threatening Commander Binks, he actually eats the cigarette that's sticking out of the packet that he's been using as a pretend communicator. This was unscripted and accidental, an outtake shows Craig Charles spitting it out in disgust and wondering out loud why he did it.
Many of the model effects shot for the episode were removed during editing, as the story overran by eight minutes. One of the cut scenes showed the ship changing shape, so the episode contains shots of the Holoship both before and after its transformation but with no footage of the change actually occurring.
The holograms of the Enlightenment are apparently upgraded holograms, seemingly composed of faster-than-light particles - tachyons - like their ship. Their upgraded status is signified by the different "H" forehead symbol; this one surrounded by a circle. The hologram of the Alternate Rimmer in Back to Reality (1992) was also apparently such an upgraded hologram, having the same symbol as the of the crew of the Holoship.
The model for the Holoship was created by FX man Paul McGuinness, and crafted in clear perspex. Originally the Holoship was going to "fold up" at two points to convert it from its straight line to a Z shape, but the clip of it changing was left on the cutting room floor. The ship is seen in both forms on in the episode. The actual transition can be seen in the special features of the Series V DVD.
This episode introduces a slight redesign for the badge that Rimmer wears on his chest, it now incorporates a nameplate with "RIMMER" engraved on it. The next episode,
The Inquisitor (1992), features a line where the Cat says to Rimmer "Don't fall for that one, bud. He read it on your uniform."
