Synopsis

  • The Red Dwarf is to break the light barrier in twenty-four hours and Lister is packing his bags to go into stasis, he intends to stay until the ship reaches Earth. Lister is shaving in the quarters when the light barrier is crossed twenty-two hours early, he witnesses a strange event in the mirror, his reflection has cut himself and is talking to Rimmer, he carries on with shaving and cuts himself as his reflection did and calls for Rimmer whom comes rushing in. The event seems to have stopped and Rimmer leaves.

Later, Cat meets Lister bringing an entire clothes rack with him, not wanting to leave any of his clothes behind. Lister goes into the science room and Rimmer is there, the latter is talking to another Lister who isn't there and leaves. Literally the instant Rimmer leaves another comes in, a startled Lister asks how he did that and Rimmer repeats the previous conversation. He follows Rimmer into the corridor and Cat rushes past clutching his mouth because he lost his tooth, they arrive in the quarters and find Cat there about to eat Lister's fish. Holly is asked what's happening, he says because they're travelling faster than light speed they're witnessing future events, Rimmer spots a photograph on Lister's bunk of Lister holding two babies. Lister hasn't seen the photograph before.

The ship is shaken by a massive explosion, Lister rushes to the science room to investigate where Rimmer tells him he saw Lister die, apparently messing with the consoles. Lister wonders how to avoid his death, it starts with Cat breaking his tooth, Lister rushes the quarters where Cat is about to eat his robot goldfish, he stops him but Cat still breaks his tooth.

Lister upset about dying, according to Rimmer he gets blown up, an alarm is sounded and Holly asks for Lister's help. The navigation computer is overheating and Lister is the only who can repair it, he fixes the machine without consequence. A jubilant Lister returns to the quarters with Rimmer and sees an elderly version of himself on his bunk, aged one-hundred and seventy-one with a cybernetic arm. He tells Lister what really happened, in the future Lister will have twin sons, Jim and Bexley, Rimmer saw Bexley die, the old Lister tells his past self to take a camera to the medical room.

Lister waits outside the medical room, where his future self exits with the twin sons and tells him to take the photo.
