- Favor is taking a short but very tough route which the men question. Another trail boss John Cord tells Favor he is wrong. When Favor becomes sick, he asks Cord to take over but the men question Cord's motives.
- Battling a drought, Gil Favor turns the drive off the trail onto badlands, to save time. But his drovers doubt Gil's judgment, especially after a more experienced trail boss John Cord who's passing by, advises against the rougher route. Gil, thinking he is suffering brain fever from an old Civil War injury, seeks the help of the stern, older boss, who is fleeing back home from an unnamed danger. Cord agrees to take over the herd to save the cattle but with no word from Favor about the change, the men and especially Rowdy question Cord's motives. The men quickly admit that Cord's strategy for moving the cattle is letting them make better time while easier on the cattle and men. However, when Rowdy learns Cord's plans for crossing the river, he suspects Cord is working with the Bates gang who want them to pay tribute to cross. In reality Cord has killed the leader of the Bates gang and they want revenge. The Bates gang spots Cord's ramrod in town who leads them to the sick Favor. The ramrod is killed and Favor has to warn Cord and his men to save the herd after accidentally letting slip his herd is coming through.—David Stevens
- Suffering from fever, Favor makes a wrong decision: taking the thirsty cattle on a direct two-day route to water over rocky terrain with no known or likely trail, instead of going on a circular four-day route over similar terrain but via a known trail. Fortunately, renowned trail boss John Cord (Dan O'Herlihy) happens to be traveling by, and Favor beseeches him to take over the drive while Favor and Cord's sidekick go to town for medical treatment for what Favor thinks is an eruption of an old brain wound from the Civil War, but which turns out to be soon-passing fever. At the town, Cord's sidekick is recognized and killed by the Bates gang, old enemies of Cord (see below), and they learn that Cord is with Favor's cattle. After some testy moments with Favor's drovers, Cord assumes leadership and skillfully leads the cattle drive to Dragoon Crossing, a notorious river crossing because the Bates gang demands tribute (ten cents a head) for cattle passing through. On his last drive, Cord paid no tribute because his men outnumbered the Bates gang. But after delivering his herd to Abilene, Cord had killed one of the Bates on his way home. The gang is now waiting and planning to kill Cord at the crossing.—chipe
