Nurse Caring says the notion of photographing the last image from a cadaver's retina was from Dr. Kevorkian, the 'Death Doctor'. In 1876 (35 years before Jack Kevorkian was born) the retinal pigment rhodopsin was discovered. Rhodopsin lost its purple color when exposed to light and took several minutes to regain it. Using this period of photobleaching to photograph the last retinal image was called optography. While writers still love optography, scientists gave up on the hopelessly flawed idea long before Kevorkian was potty trained.
