Something for the weekend...
canndyman29 August 2020
Bodie and Doyle are enjoying some time off - spending time with their girlfriends at the remote farmhouse where one of the girls lives. Unbeknownst to them, three armed blaggers are on the run from a botched supermarket raid nearby. The bungling trio take refuge at the farmhouse - holding Bodie, Doyle, their partners, one of the girls mother and her young son all hostage. Bodie and Doyle are desperate to overcome their captors - but are thwarted at every attempt, as the safety of the vulnerable family has to be their priority.

This is a tense and claustrophobic episode - and once more the boys' holiday time leads them into unwanted trouble. They both use their ingenuity along the way to appease the armed robbers - Doyle acting as a medic to one of the men, who has a bullet wound, and Bodie using his to get the farm's clapped-out Land Rover roadworthy to aid their captors' escape.

There's not much opportunity for humour in this one - although it's fun when both Bodie and Doyle ambiguously reveal themselves to be 'civil servants' - the gang smirking at what they think must be the pair's mundane day jobs - little do they know!

It's left eventually left to a perceptive Cowley to realize that something isn't quite right about his absent and incommunicado agents - but has he left things just a bit too late...

Tension's racked up

Warning: Spoilers
WEEKEND IN THE COUNTRY is a really fine episode of the show in which the tension is racked up to the limit throughout and the whole thing builds to an explosive climax. It's another hostage scenario, with our unlucky twosome on holiday and finding themselves imprisoned in a farmhouse by ruthless gang members. The supporting cast, which includes Brians Pringle and Croucher, is excellent and the emphasis on hard-hitting action and thrills over the more familiar jokey humour is a great decision.

Weekend in the Country

Bodie and Doyle are spending a weekend in the country with their girlfriends.

Horses, a rustic farmhouse and then some armed robbers turn up. They were making a getaway from a botched robbery and one of them got wounded.

Bodie and Doyle would love to grapple with the three men but they have several women to protect and a young schoolboy. So they bide their time for the right moment.

One of the robbers has the hots for one of their girlfriends. He keeps making improper advances.

Aid might come from Cowley as he needs to call Bodie and Doyle back but they are not responding.

I thought this episode was lukewarm. It looked like a bottle episode as they are stuck in the farmhouse. Doyle ends up playing a medic to one of the shot robbers. The action bits are left to Cowley.

There are some familiar faces in this episode. Brian Croucher is another of those actors who appeared in many shows in the 1970s and 1980s. Bryan Pringle had a prolific career on tv and film.
