Fires on all cylinders and really motors

The Professionals could be fairly pot-boiler stuff: the routine story of Viva Zappata moustachioed baddies chasing our two heroes in then current Ford cars which, presumably for reasons of cost, never suffer visible damage either in the chase or inevitable hail-of-bullets shoot-out. Bodie gets the girl, Doyle doesn't. Cowley can relax and pour himself a whiskey.

This episode however moves up several gears - chases are impressive: good action shooting and satisfying destruction. But also the plot - the tension, double-dealing, the moral dilemmas. Cleverly the episode subtly signals that it will be no ordinary one - regular viewers will note that Cowley shakes hands with B&D before despatching them on their mission. He's never done that before. They don't know what to make of that gesture. Is it a farewell or a profound apology - or both? Either way it's ominous.

The only thing wrong with it? That it wasn't shot in 35mm, given a few tweaks, somewhat bigger budget and made as a feature film.

Silent running...
canndyman13 September 2020
Cowley assigns Bodie and Doyle to collect a mysterious (and silent) Arab diplomat - he arrives in London by boat, and they escort him to two separate country mansions for secret meetings. Their journey with him is far from smooth though, and they end up being tailed and ambushed by armed attackers along the way - who it seems will stop at nothing to see the anonymous 'Mr X' is made history.

This is an action-packed and enjoyable episode - the only one helmed by former 'Sweeney' director Tom Clegg. It gives Bodie and Doyle plenty of opportunities to get into action set-pieces, as well as dish out their trademark humour.

The Peter Pan names given to various characters are a fun touch - including Mr X's huge bodyguard whom they christen 'Tinkerbell'! There's more humour later too when Bodie commandeers an unsuspecting lady's narrowboat, promising her (not very convincingly) that she'll be compensated for any damages to her vessel.

Exotic-looking actress Jasmine Hilton also puts in a good shift as Leila - who clearly makes an impression on Doyle who seems keen to later mix business with pleasure...

This is one of the series most memorable and entertaining stories - look out too for a rather derelict-looking Oakley Court as 'Mansion 2' - seen here long after its Hammer horror years, and before it was eventually restored and converted into an upmarket hotel in the 1980s.

A humdinger

Warning: Spoilers
BLIND RUN, the penultimate episode of series two, is a real scorcher taking the form of one long chase sequence filled with violent and seat-edge antics. Various vehicles are called into play, from cars to boats, and there's even an appearance from Hammer shooting location Oakley Court along the way. Some of the cars end up looking like they appeared in BONNIE & CLYDE! Dollopings of humour add immeasurably to the fun, leaving this one of the best-ever episodes.

Blind Run
Prismark1028 February 2019
Bodie and Doyle have been given a dangerous assignment by Cowley and they are off grid on this one. They have to be the bodyguard to a mysterious middle eastern diplomat.

Cowley gives no other details and shakes both their hands. As Bodie & Doyle note, he has never done that before.

As soon as the diplomat and his hefty bodyguard arrive. Some baddies in several cars pursue them. It looks like the details of the diplomat's presence and route has been leaked.

Bodie and Doyle are on their own with just a driver as Cowley will send no other help.

This is a tense action packed episode with several shootouts.

Bodie and Doyle keep going back to that handshake by Cowley. Was that meant to be a farewell?

Blind Run is an odd episode. Cowley places his two best men in grave danger and acting that they are disposable. Some intelligence people watch the movements of the baddies on monitors but do nothing to help CI-5.
