Another Nice Interview
Private Screenings: James Garner (2001)
*** 1/2 (out of 4)
It's not easy finding a good interview with actor James Garner since he doesn't enjoy doing them but thankfully he did sit down with Robert Osborne to go over his movie and TV career. Garner starts off talking about he pretty much just kicked around the country doing odd jobs until he finally got into acting to try and get some money. He talks about his first play The Caine Mutiny Court Martial with Henry Fonda and then he talks about getting into television. He discusses working with Marlon Brando in SAYONARA and says that the two got along very well. He said Brando was always willing to help the young actor, which is something that many have said wasn't always true. Garner also talks about working with Steve McQueen on THE GREAT ESCAPE. Apparently McQueen was getting into quite a bit of trouble in Germany but Garner says the entire cast got along great with the exception of Charles Bronson who pretty much stayed to himself. Audrey Hepburn, Shirley MacLaine and of course the TV show Maverick are discussed before going onto future films like VICTOR/VICTORIA, SPACE COWBOYS and the film version of MAVERICK. Garner might not like doing interviews but he comes across very warm and funny here. Of course he's got that great voice that just drags you in but he seems very open and honest and especially when he talks about not being a film buff and having very little use for films (outside of acting in them of course).
