- Doreen wants to know why neither Karen nor her mother told her the truth. Karen is so annoyed by Doreen's rejection of Alice that she tells Doreen the real reason why her mother doesn't want to get too involved (terminal cancer). Doreen finally asks Karen to take her to see Alice at home; Alice invites her back any time. Meg takes Rosie to maternity to convince her that her baby is gone; she describes her own case: being born in prison. Chrissie is listening in and gets sick of Meg's optimism; she points out Rosie is a junkie and won't get her baby back. She replies to Meg's criticisms of her own potential as a mother by telling Meg about her own 'family' life with an alcoholic mother and a sexually abusive father. After Lizzie gets a letter from Doreen, she asks Mrs. Davidson if they could have typing classes; instead, Vera volunteers to teach the women on their own time. Using a fire drill for cover, Roz escapes in a typewriter repair van. Rosie rushes to save her baby in the maternity wing, attacking Chrissie because she thinks she has taken Sam away. The inmates are angered at Vera's cold-hearted attitudes and actions and plot revenge. Doreen returns to Alice's home alone but gets no answer when she knocks.—jeaneva
