Plot Summary

Hercule Poirot has a rare opportunity when he gets a second chance to solve a murder circumstance prevented him from solving two years before. On his way to visit Capt. Hastings in the Argentine, Poirot had stopped in Buenos Aires. While out for dinner, a young woman named Iris Russell was poisoned. The police found cyanide in her purse and ruled her death to be suicide, something her husband Barton Russell refuses to accept. When Poirot agrees with him and raises objections to the hasty police verdict, he is quickly ordered deported. Now, two years later, Russell Barton is hosting a dinner in London on the anniversary of his wife's death with everyone who was present invited to the event. Trivia While in Buenos Aires, Poirot is seen reading a newspaper called "La Nación". A newspaper by that name actually existed in the 1930's when this story is set and is still printed today. Also the font used to print the name of the newspaper on top of the pages seems to be the same as in the real newspaper. See more »
Goofs During Poirot's visit to Buenos Aires (which takes place in 1934), there is a military coup which is said to depose Argentine President Yrigoyen. Hipolito Yrigoyen was indeed deposed by the military, but the coup took place on Sept. 6, 1930, not in 1934. See more »
