Interested in seeing what Kurt Kasznar did before he became Uncle Max on Broadway in The Sound of Music? He was doing television playhouses, and you can catch him in The Philco Television Playhouse's "Run Like a Thief". A head waiter in Barbara O'Neil's restaurant, he takes pride in his work and believes it take artistic talent to become a good bus boy. His protégé is James Dean, although it's a bit of a stretch to see Jimmy in the part. He doesn't seem like the type who follows the rules, is a stickler for procedure, and holds his uniform to a high standard. The kid can't even stand up straight! But that's where acting comes in, and that's the point of this televised play.
Barbara accidentally drops a diamond bracelet, and when Kurt finds it and playfully puts it on his wife's wrist, he doesn't foresee the power such a bracelet will have on them. They get seduced by the glitz and glamour, but when they decide to keep the bauble for themselves, the police get involved. Kurt and his wife Gusti Huber are the leads in this one, not James Dean, but fear not; you'll still be able to see his signature crying scenes and tormented, anguished pout. Overall, this tv movie won't become your favorite, but it's not bad for an evening's entertainment.
