As Sally Barnes leaves her trailer-home headed to the restaurant where she is employed as a waitress, a car that narrowly misses running her down, turns and tries unsuccessfully again. Later, Pete, Tony and Maggie show up at the diner where it is revealed that Sally, who is expecting the trio for dinner, is Pete's serious love interest. She joins them for a few minutes and explains that prior to her relocating to San Remo, Sally's husband Tom had died in Cleveland some five years previously, leaving her a widow with a young daughter, Judy. Sally asks Tony for help in a custody suit filed by her father-in-law. The two couples quickly become close. Shortly after the three depart, Sally is confronted by her ex-boyfriend Leo, a shady character known to police, who admits to the car attacks earlier that day. He wants money or he will foul her custody case. Late that evening, as Pete is about to depart Sally's trailer, police arrive and arrest him for the murder of Leo. Now Tony must not only resolve the custody issue, but of far more dire importance, clear his best friend of the murder charges, all without the support of his investigator.
