- Season 1 Episode 5 The Frog Prologue: A man walks along the docks at night, apparently waiting on someone, when a switchblade yielding man catches his attention, as he climbs crates on the dock trying to escape, the blade is thrown hitting him in his back, he falls to the water below, likely dead, as his hat surfaces without him. Along comes Peter Gunn walking down the same dock, apparently looking for someone, he notices a hat floating on the surface nearby the dock. As Pete walks away, another man appears looking at the water below. Pete is in an apartment building looking at the mail boxes, he walks to an apartment door, knocks, opens it, walks in, is accosted by a knife wielding man, they struggle, the man stabs at Pete hitting the floor, Pete shoots, killing the man while a lady witnesses the shooting. Jacobi has arrived while the covered corpse is wheeled out on a gurney, Pete says the Frog seemed nervous when he asked Pete to meet him at the dock, and Jacobi confirms the style of hat the Frog wore. As Jacobi exits, with Pete following, saying he will be at Mother's, the same mysterious man appears afterward in the same hallway, out of sight from the two. The man turns out to be a henchman named Vernon Lilly. At Mother's, the band plays, Edie sings, Pete enters, sits, when they end the number, Edie introduces Pete to horn player Shorty Rogers. Outside, Mr. Lilly is seen crossing the street, meets a car, out steps the boss and his henchmen, as they enter through the back door at a closed Mother's. Pete gets up, confronts the boss, a Mr. Swink, discussing the killed man earlier tonight, unidentifiable to either Swink or Pete. Swink believes Pete knows something the Frog was hiding and had intended to discuss before the murder at the dock. A confrontation occurs when the henchmen hold Pete's hands to the small table, Swink raps them with his cane like he rapped Mother across the arm minutes before for interfering; the bad guys all leave through the back door. Pete is at his apartment explaining to Edie the goings on of the evening. The Frog worked for Swink as a leg man, an assassin named Nester likely killed the Frog, and Swink thinks The Frog told or gave Pete something and is earnestly looking for it, hence the assault. Jacobi arrives showing Pete a $10,000 insurance policy naming Loretta Gymps as beneficiary. Pete goes looking for Gymps, since Jacobi gets nowhere with Loretta, seems she does not like cops. Pete finds Loretta's shack by the docks, she confirms The Frog is dead, she also knows about the policy, as she awaits company, likely Swink. She gives Pete The Frog's notebook of deals from working for Swink. Pete leaves her shack and is met by henchmen, is assaulted, his gun and the book taken from him, as Swink takes the book, he orders one man to take care of Loretta, Lilly walks Pete away. Gun shots are heard, Loretta kills the henchman at her door, Lilly fights with Pete, knocks Pete down, takes aim at Pete, Loretta shoots Lilly dead, while Swink sends the other henchman to investigate. Jacobi shoots, kills the henchman, Pete takes Loretta's empty gun away. Jacobi shoots at Swink fleeing, his car is stopped by the crates it hit escaping, Jacobi orders him out of the car, hands him his cane, as he slowly limps away followed by the lieutenant with gun drawn. Pete wakes Edie from his couch as he enters with a kitten from Loretta.
