Keeping Rocco alive
ShadeGrenade31 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Terry Nation's 'Five Miles To Midnight' has Danny and Brett in Italy, and entrusted with notorious gangster 'Frank Rocco' ( the late Robert Hutton ), who wishes to testify against the Mob. He is stashed away in the back of an old truck belonging to glamorous photographer 'Sidonie' ( Joan Collins ), which sets off across the Italian countryside. 'Torino' ( Robert Rietty ), a rival mobster, is on their trail. What makes the journey even more difficult is Rocco's arrogance. They eventually abandon the truck, taking refuge at the opulent villa of 'Count Sangallo' ( Ferdy Mayne ). But he is not what as he seems...

The story is a familiar one, made watchable by the location work and the performances of the leads. Collins, this was in her pre-'Dynasty' days, appeared in quite a few cult shows, such as 'Batman', 'Star Trek', 'Mission: Impossible', and 'Space;1999'. Hutton's other credits include the B-movie 'They Came From Beyond Space' ( 1967 ), and an amusing cameo in 'Doctor In Clover' ( 1966 ) in which he played a Hollywood movie star rushed to hospital after getting a splinter in his finger while making a war picture. Jean Marsh appears briefly - her character 'Nicola' gets shot - in the opening sequence, as a spaced-out girl who gives the police information. Mayne was 'Count Von Krolock' in Roman Polanski's 'The Fearless Vampire Killers' ( 1967 ). There is an amusing scene in this episode when Sangallo unexpectedly presents Danny and Brett with a bill. They'd previously assumed they were getting his hospitality for free!

Directed by Val Guest.

One of my favorite episodes, He's very funny and the heroes are really close friends, with great views over Rome and Italy.
