John Holland in Perry Mason (1957)

Goofs

The Case of the Crimson Kiss

Perry Mason

Edit

Continuity

When Anita Bonsal threatens suicide and she is pulled away from window by a bailiff, a chair for her has mysteriously appeared behind Perry.

Factual errors

Burger had Della testify, stating that she did not have Perry's claim of privilege. Actually, as Perry's employee, the attorney-client privilege extends to her as well. But Burger could have called Perry because at the time he obtained the key to the murder apartment no one involved in the case was his client. He got involved because Louise Marlow was a family friend, and neither Fay Allison nor Anita Bonsal had retained him (both were in comas). Either Perry or Della could testify on any matter in the case up to the point Fay Allison became his client.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs

The murderer kisses her victim, leaving a clear lipstick print on his forehead. The print was left by someone with thick lips; the person who eventually confesses to the murder has rather thin lips that would have left no such print.

It was very common in this era, and still is today, for women with thin lips to sometimes use lipstick to make their lips look fuller.
The judge addresses Hamilton Burger as "Counselor"; any judge would know that the correct address is "Prosecutor" or "Mister Prosecutor".

The word "Counselor" means "a trial lawyer". As the representative of the state prosecuting a defendant at a trial, a prosecutor is, indeed, a trial lawyer and therefore the term "counselor" is correct.

Miscellaneous

When Anita runs to the window and threatens to jump, the blinds are pulled up and the window is completely open to the outside -- this would never be permitted in a courtroom. Even if it were needed for ventilation, it would be equipped with bars (as a jail cell) so as to prevent any type of escape (or suicide) such as shown here.

Boom mic visible

The shadow of a boom mike can be seen on the wall behind the judge's box during the last ten minutes of the episode.

Character error

The judge admonished Shirley Tanner against answering questions that had been objected to without the judge's permission, but because the judge sustained the objection he should have ordered the answer to be stricken from the record.
During the course of this episode both Perry Mason and guest character Louise Marlowe mispronounce the word 'barbiturates' as "barbituates", leaving out the second 'r'.
