James is in desperate need of a warehouse as the the number of empty wine barrels increases and he thinks he's found the ideal location but the owner, the recently widowed Mrs. Arkwright, wants £650. James gets his inept brother Robert to woo Miss Simmons, one of Mrs. Arkwright's staff, to get information and when he learns her true intentions, makes her a suitable proposal. He also has to get rid of the current occupants of the warehouse and Anne's fortuitous discovery makes that somewhat easier. Meanwhile, Anne wonders where her father has been getting his money. He's been buying new clothes and never seems short of cash when he goes to the pub. She and James soon learn that the old man has mortgaged the house, but only when the bailiffs arrive to take possession.
