One for the Romantics

Warning: Spoilers
Fun, light-hearted, low-octane episode that primarily focuses on a romance between Marilyn Whirlwind and "the flying man" played by Bill Irwin, one of those guys you've seen a lot in other movies and shows, but can never seem to remember his name. He did an excellent job.

I enjoyed it. Had all the little quirks we've come to know and love about the show. Joel's scheming to get out of town. Holliing thinks Shelly's feet are too big, so he proposes hoping the nuptials will reignite his ardor. A few other fun, typically quirky little twists that I really enjoyed. I think the main message was life is what it is, so make the most of it while you can.

Actually...

Shelly does have quite big feet. Cynthia Geary is apparently 5 ft 7 & a half, and size 11 US is like size 9 UK.

That said, I'm 5 ft 5 & a half & have the same size feet :)

It's called having a good grip of the ground! (Per my Dad)

A Few Moments

There are a lot of things going on here. First of all a group of circus people infiltrate the town when their bus breaks down. The have various roles in things but nothing huge. One of them, a man who apparently can fly (we never see this) falls for Marilyn and actually asks her to go with him once the bus is fixed. Plot number two is Holling's insensitivity in pointing out that Shelly has big feet. She knows this is true but can't believe he said that. Maggie seizes the opportunity to start an anti-male campaign and look after Shelly. It's understandable considering her track record. Joel goes inward, realizing that he needs to make use of the time he has to hone his craft and learn more and more medicine. These are all there, but I never quite get a feeling of any continuity. One could just read about their Schrodinger.

Willing Suspension of Disbelief

This episode expressed Northern Exposure's approach to mixing fantasy with reality in a most delightfully convincing way. A wandering band of entertainers led by a disillusioned quantum physicist who prefers controlled magic to unpredictable quantum elements is immanently believable in Cicely. This is the archetypal episode to represent Northern Exposure's endearing quirkiness. It is my favourite episode among many that embody the show's uniqueness.

Middle of the road awkward episode.

The annoying 'circus' comes to town and we're subjected to one of the most awkward 'romantic' situations with Enrique the MUTE and Marilyn the lifeless. Terrible episode which in between is a 'fight' with Holling and Shelly about the size of her feet. Maybe 8 episodes per season would have been proper like the first 2 seasons.. falling asleep with many of these episodes being cliche, cheesy and drag on.
