- Greg Harris is a a happy mild-mannered architect, who while walking on the street and talking on the phone with his girlfriend Linda one day, in a moment of carelessness collides with a passerby and accidentally spills his hot coffee all over the man's face and clothes. The man, who turns out to be Russian, screams in rage and puts a curse in Russian on Greg - everyone he meets from now on will hate him. Greg doesn't take this seriously, but after several scary incidents, one more severe than the next, that culminate with an attempt on his life by a group of construction workers, he asks a police officer for help, only to learn that everything that's been happening to him on that hellish day is word for word the plot of the latest bestselling horror novel from a famous horror novelist, William Price. Greg refuses to believe this, but after even more tragedy, he eventually has no choice but to accept it as the only explanation. He breaks into Price's house, holds him at gunpoint and in desperation asks him to rewrite the end of his novel. However, the story has its own highly ironic ending to wrap itself up.
- Harlow Winton works as an online salesman and hates the fact that he's just a working stiff. Everything changes when he's informed that his rich great-uncle has died and left him, as the last of his family's line, his entire estate. Winton moves into his gruncle's old mansion, where lights are kept on at all times. He soon realizes why - the mansion is haunted with demonic shadows that devour anything living they come in contact with. His great uncle's solicitor Henry Matson explains that the shadows are the physical manifestation of all the evil and suffering that Winton's family of rich exploiters, who founded their town, has caused over centuries through unscrupulous exploitation of the locals. Matson offers Winton a way out - if Winton agrees to sell the mansion to the town, he'll get some money for his effort, but not nearly as much as the mansion would normally be worth, if it wasn't haunted. Winton instead decides to accept the greedy ways of his family and fight the shadows.
