The Everett Family is celebrating the oldest child Hal's (David Doremus) birthday. His father Professor Everett (Richard Long) gives him a telescope. Nanny (Juliet Mills) mysteriously gives a special powered lens despite not knowing about the telescope. The younger son Butch (Trent Lehman) feels left out, so the professor lets him use his old telescope. Butch discovers a comet to the family's shock and perhaps Nanny's help. The professor reports it to the Bureau of Astronomy who tells Butch they will let him name the comet. A science writer Marvin Winters (Larry Gelman, Vinnie from "The Odd Couple") and photographer Keith Talbot (a still-active actor Douglas Rowe) from the Consolidated Press come to the Everrett household to interview Butch. They later receive word that the comet sighting has been claimed by Dr. Anthony Lazko (character actor Sam Jaffe) who comes to visit Butch to work out the dilemma.
