The man in there has the best brain I ever saw!
***SPOILERS*** Interesting "Naked City" episode about a man once high priced shyster/lawyer and now down in the dumps Willard Manson, Luther Adler, who blows a fuse in his brain when he gets the news from the doctor on duty , Philiip Abbott, that his wife Jessica, Susan Oliver, first-the good news-gave birth to a healthy six pound boy but-here's comes the bad news-she died in childbirth. Refusing to believe what he heard Mason goes about as if nothing happened, that his wife died, and plans to take her and his son home and pay the doctor bills before the week is out!
Desperate as well as nutty as a fruitcake Mason attempt to scratch up the $3,000.00 he owes the hospital by any means possible even if he has to kill for it! Having already blown his life savings gambling the what seems like zombie and robot like Mason feels the best way to get the cash, after almost killing a friend of his and taking his $1,000.00, is go to the nearest gambling den and clean up on the crap table! Things don't exactly work out the way Mason planned it as he loses the $1,000.00 and gets thrown of the place for trying to use a personal check, that would bounce, to keep being in the crap game that in fact busted him!
Going so far to see his estranged 35 year old son, whom he hasn't seen in 19 years, successful businessman Willard Banes, Thomas A. Carlin, to beg for money to pay his wife's, who dead, doctor bills Mason gets not money but sheer contempt from him. Banes who changed his last name, Mason, and choose his new one, Beans or Banes, out of an empty can of Campbell's Pork & Beans that he found in a garbage can, tells him to get lost in the jungles of South Anerica and with a little luck get rescued by a tribe of head hunters. Now more desperate then ever Mason gun in hand plans to raid the gambling den he was thrown out of and rob it to get the money to pay his wife's hospital bills! It's there that Mason gunned down two of the people there and got shot in return but that, in him being crazy and not feeling pain, doesn't slow him down one bit!
***SPOILERS*** It takes a while for the NYPD including it's top psychology, he's taking night courses on the subject in his spear time, expert the kind and being in love with all the world, even rats like Willard Mason, Det. Adam Flint, Paul Burke, to realize that they've got an out of control nut on their hands who running around loose and, by not being committed, unattended. Reality finally hits Mason when it finally sinks into his head just how crazy is is and always was as the cops close in on him on the hospital grounds where he collapsed! Trying to get enough strength to shad a tear for all the harm and damage he caused the fatally injured and what seemed like immune to bullets and indestructible Mason finally passes away. And with that so does his reign of both terror & insanity that he caused when he cracked up and ended up losing it!
