Jessica takes a teaching position in New York, gets an apartment and finds its previous tenant has been murdered.

Tired of hotels, Jessica takes a Manhattan apartment now that she has accepted a New York teaching position. By the time Seth visits there, he can say 'I told you so' as he did at her Cabot Cove send-off party, although she'll spend weekends there. Her apartment's previous tenant, Mike Freelander, has been murdered and her apartment ransacked. So, Seth, moves in as a temporary guardian angel and questions the neighbors. She doesn't leave snooping to the NYPD detectives but investigates Freelander's family life and their involvement in theft and contraband smuggling. Jessica decides to take an apartment in New York, planning to stay there two or three days a week with the rest of her time spent in Cabot Cove. Her friends throw her a farewell party and Seth, for one, is convinced that she will be in danger every minute of the day. He seems to be right when the former tenant of her new apartment is killed in the parking garage and her apartment is ransacked. Seth is soon there to give assistance but when the dead man's brother and business partner is also killed, Jessica has two murders to solve.
