- Playwright Martin Tremayne invites his good friend Jessica Fletcher to visit him in California, ostensibly for her to read his recently completed play. In reality, Martin is still very disturbed by the death of his wife Vivian, feeling responsible for her having committed suicide. He tells Jessica that he very much fears he is going insane. He's seen an apparition in his garden and is convinced that his late wife has returned to seek her revenge. Jessica isn't buying any of it and, when someone is murdered not long after her arrival, she is certain something far more sinister is going on. A neighbor's dog provides the vital clue she needs to finger the killer.—garykmcd
- Martin Tremaine convinces Jessica to visit his Carmel estate and discuss his latest play, "Angel of Death'", which she finds disturbingly dark, then learns why: he fears he's going mad, being physically haunted by the veiled figure of his departed wife Vivian (who committed suicide). However, in the estate's cottage where his former secretary Lisa Ryder is staying after an accident that blinded her, Philip Stoddard, the husband of his step-daughter Courtney, is stabbed to death. Jessica finds out all about the whole family, mostly present for the weekend, plus Martin's ex-lover Lisa Ryder, and traps the killer.—KGF Vissers
