Frightening the Masses
BrandtSponseller28 July 2006
Although they had flirted on "The Munsters" prior to this with the reaction of the normal folks in their suburban neighborhood to the unusual starring family, this is the first episode that exposes a Munster to a large number of citizens.

In fact, the exposure is so widespread that Herman makes it to the newspaper, as a "Monster" attacking people in Midcity Park--there's been a spate of purse snatchings there. Herman's been taking walks in the park late at night because it's the only thing that will cure his insomnia, which is caused by financial worries, and that's being caused primarily by Grandpa, who is using massive amounts of electricity for his latest experiment in the dungeon. Grandpa's experiment provides a secondary plot for the show.

Of course, Herman and family do not realize that Herman is the supposed monster seen in Midcity Park, since they don't think that Herman _is_ a monster. At one point, Herman thinks he sees the monster in the park, and he's just as frightened as anyone else.

The writers are able to play with a lot of fun ideas, including a policeman whom the commissioner increasingly thinks is crazy (this isn't helped by events such as the policeman being in drag at one point). The episode opens with one of the most traditional horror sequences of the series as Lily creeps down a staircase holding a candelabra only to find Herman grunting/growling and making disturbing faces, all in very heavy shadows, but quickly moves to various explorations of the Munsters as a typical sitcom family--making breakfast and sending the kids off, shaving, etc. The Munsters as a metaphor for ethnic folks invading a homogenous neighborhood isn't really present here as it was in episode number 2, but the Munsters as more literal monsters in a milieu of intentionally silly humor is just as fun.

The Midnight Marauder Of Midcity Park - Hilarious!
ccthemovieman-127 March 2007
This was a memorable episode with Herman having trouble sleeping and deciding to make late-night walks in the park. You can imagine the sight of this guy being seen at that hour in "the dead of night!"

Worrying about bills ("braces for Eddie's fangs, electric bill for Grandpa's experiments, etc.) is what is keeping Herman awake. Lily suggests getting some "air" in his head, so he takes nightly walks in Midcity Park. Soon, police are getting reports a suspicious character in he park. Between people seeing Herman, and a real mugger in the park, the headline in the paper soon says, "Creature Terrorizes Midcity Park."

It's a lot of the little gags in here in between the main story that I appreciated, such as the various scenes at the police station and Grandpa's "big "experiment in the dungeon. Those offered some nice laughs, especially the latter.

Overall, this episode had as many gags as any I ever saw on the show - a really wild 25 minutes.

If you don't love this one, you must be dead!

Having not seen the Munsters for many years, I decided to work my way through the series in order. I'm only on the third episode at the moment, but this has got to be one of the funniest. And if it isn't, I'm not sure whether my sides will be able to take much more strain.

This excellent episode sees Herman (Fred Gwynne) taking late night strolls through his local park as a cure for insomnia. However, when the local paper reports sightings of a huge monster in the area, Lily tries to convince her husband to quit his night-time walks. After all, she doesn't want Herman to run into the monster!!!

With loads of funny sight gags, and plenty of monstrous puns, A Walk On The Mild Side is a real winner from start to finish. Funniest moments include the hilarious reactions of the people who spy Herman as he strolls around the park (including one woman whose hair literally stands on end), Grandpa's silly invention (which never seems to work correctly), and the ridiculous attempts of the local police force to apprehend the 'creature'.
