One reason I can still watch all these episodes of "The Munsters" 40 years after seeing them for the first time, and then later as re-runs, is that I still enjoy the absurd humor. It's not always there in bunches, but it was in this episode: a story filled with outrageous scenes and dialog. You really have to like "the theater of the absurd" to appreciate the corny and often stupid-looking jokes in here. I mean, where else would you hear lines like the following:
"I hope a whale hasn't eaten him; I wanted him to help me with my homework tonight." - Eddie
"You know, for a missing link, he's a pretty nice guy." - a Russian sailor.
As for this week's story, the Munsters are headed to Paradise Cove for a little vacation. Eddie asks, "Hey, Pop, are you really going to go scuba diving?" Herman replies, "Yes, I am son. You can meet some very interesting things under the briny deep." Well, Herman does just that: he meets a bunch of Russians.
A few more quotes give you more of an idea of what happens in this crazy story.
"It's some kind of crazy sea monster!" - Russian fisherman seeing Herman caught it a big net with a bunch of fish.
"This is not sea monster; this is missing link between fish and man. Look how he's put together." - other man on boat.
Oh, my poor pussycat; where or where can be?" -- Lily.
The Russians think Herman is "a rare anthropological find." The Americans are baffled, too. "I've been in the State Department for 15 years, and I've never seen a spy this ugly (looking at a composite sketch of Herman)."
Herman gets along great with the Red sailors. They wind up giving him a farewell party. As Herman is dancing, he says, "It's times like this, I'm glad I am a Lawrence Welk fan. Notchey, baby, your're a gasser." ("Ninotchka" is a name of a 1939 film and character played by Greta Garbo).
A Russian fishing trawler accidentally picks up Herman, who was out scuba-diving (if you can picture that!) and the crew thinks our boy is an undercover spy! Meanwhile, the bigwigs in Moscow think Herman must be a spy in the Cold War!
As mentioned, this turns out to be one crazy scene after another and is one of the more entertaining Munster episodes I've seen. Great stuff!
