- Mr. Rogers: So friends are friends. We thought a lot about friends, haven't we? And we've thought a lot about food. Especially food for the body. And that's a very important kind of food, because when a person is very, very hungry, he or she can't think of any other kinds of food. But there are other kinds. Music, for instance, is food for the hearing. And paintings and beautiful scenes are food for the seeing. And books are food for the soul. And loving other people is food for the spirit. Many kinds of foods. You could think of some yourself, and many ways of saying that you love someone.
- [last lines]
- Mr. Rogers: One wonderful way of showing that you love people is being able to accept the food they give you. If you really like it and you can tell them so, that can give them a very, very good feeling. I think of these television visits as my way of giving to you. I'm glad that you like to be with us. Bye-bye!
- [Daniel had planted cans of vegetable soup]
- Daniel Striped Tiger: I don't understand. I planted you all just like I planted the other can, and it grew into a nice soup tree. But why aren't you growing at all? Maybe you want me to sing to you.
- [sings]
- Daniel Striped Tiger: Vegetable soup. Vegetable soup. Vegetable soup, please grow. Please grow. Vegetable soup. Vegetable soup.
- [Bob Dog arrives]
- Daniel Striped Tiger: Oh, Bob Dog. Hi.
- Bob Dog: Hi.
- Daniel Striped Tiger: I was singing to my plants.
- Bob Dog: Yes, I... I heard you.
- Daniel Striped Tiger: They're taking longer to grow than the other one did.
- Bob Dog: I know, and uh... Daniel, they're... They're not going to grow.
- Daniel Striped Tiger: What do you mean? You saw how the other can grew up to be a vegetable soup tree. Why won't these?
- Bob Dog: Because... Because I'm not going to fool you anymore.
- Daniel Striped Tiger: Fool me?
- Bob Dog: Daniel, I am the one who made the vegetable soup canned tree.
- Daniel Striped Tiger: You made it?
- Bob Dog: I bought the cans at the grocery store, and while you weren't looking, I put them on the little branch and stuck them in the crock there.
- Daniel Striped Tiger: Why did you fool me?
- Bob Dog: Well, I... I didn't want to disappoint you. And besides, everybody knows that cans don't grow cans.
- Daniel Striped Tiger: I didn't know that.
- Bob Dog: That's the trouble. I didn't want to hurt you. I didn't want you to...
- [glumly]
- Bob Dog: I'm sorry, Daniel.
- Daniel Striped Tiger: [in a broken voice] But I thought I could grow vegetable soup for everyone in the world.
- Bob Dog: I know, and I should've... Uh... I should've told you right away.
- Daniel Striped Tiger: What can I do?
- Bob Dog: You could cry.
- Daniel Striped Tiger: I'm already doing that.
- Bob Dog: You could, uh... You could tell me that you're still my friend.
- Daniel Striped Tiger: Oh, I'll always be your friend, Bob Dog. You didn't mean to make me sad.
- Bob Dog: Oh. Umm... Daniel, I'm... I'm glad you understand that.
- Daniel Striped Tiger: But I don't have anything to give.
- Bob Dog: You could give your friendship. I mean, there's nothing better to give than friendship.
- Daniel Striped Tiger: You mean, give friendship to the people in Northwood?
- Bob Dog: Sure. You and I can go visit, and we could play with them, and we could do all kinds of neat stuff.
- Daniel Striped Tiger: All right, but maybe I should dig up these cans that are in the ground because they're still good, and... and we could have some of them for dinner.
- Bob Dog: Oh, that's a great idea.
- [howls with joy]
- Bob Dog: Oh boy, do I feel better.
- Daniel Striped Tiger: Why?
- Bob Dog: Because I got to talk to you about it, Daniel.
- Daniel Striped Tiger: Oh, good.
