Terry as a detective again
colinprunty-121 October 2020
No doubt to keep Sweeney fans happy we have Terry in 'Carter ' mode again in a reasonable episode but not a great one. He tracks down a call girl who has ripped a wine merchant pal of Arthur's off. We have a very brainy and assertive version of Terry in this one me he very skilfully tracks down the perpetrator of the crime with great ease. Some very funny scenes including a ridiculous girlfriend that is with him early on in the episode. Story isn't the best and the writers are still at this point trying to ascertain the true characters of Arthur and Terry. More of a feel of series 1 in this one than 2.

Wine but no cheese

As a Minder aficionado, I believe, in hindsight, the first series was not great. But, it is was really getting into it's stride by this episode in series 2. However, the sublime character of Auther Edward Daley had not yet been completely matured, The fully formed, prudish version would never have indulged in innuendo about massages, nor resorted to outright nastiness as he did in with Bettina at the end of this episode. Having said that, this was thoroughly enjoyable and it was onwards and upwards from here.

A Nice Little Episode
Arthur pays cash for several cases of wine from an associate, who asks him whether he can set him up with a night on the town. Call girl shows up at the hotel, she slips him a mickey, rips him off of his cash....and the guy blames Arthur. And then threatens to sic some muscle on him if he doesn't get the cash back.

Enter Terry McCann.

This episode has all the elements that make Minder such a treat. Arthur's desperate cons. Terry doing some detective work and throwing some punches. Plus a ton of funny dialogue.

And...Det. Sgt. Chisholm. Patrick Malahide is the unsung hero of Minder, as far as I'm concerned.

Easily the best episode of Series 2 thus far. And second overall only to The Bengal Tiger (aka Mr. Mukajee) episode of Series 1.

A Nice Little Wine

Arthur has done a deal to buy some vintage French plonk from a posh wine connoisseur called Clive Stannard (Peter Jeffrey.)

Of course given Peter Jeffrey is playing this charmer means Arthur is going to be conned and Terry will have to clear up the mess.

However the episode offers us a swerve. Stannard has something popped into his drink by a prostitute in his hotel room who popped in to give him a massage. She then robbed him.

Stannard blames Arthur and accuses him of setting him up. Stannard threatens to send some heavies to sort Arthur out.

A startled Arthur needs Terry to get to the hotel and order a massage service.

I thought this was a frothy episode. The story is slight. Terry goes to the hotel, does some wine tasting and orders a prostitute. The one who comes up to give him a massage is nice, sweet and certainly does not rob him. So he has to try again.

Pam St Clement pops up as a chatty mother. There is a nice fight in a sex shop but we do not see a lot of it as a policeman tells Arthur to shift his car as he is parked on some double yellow lines.
