- Michael Anthony: [Anthony enters the library of Tipton, who is seated in a high-backed chair listening to a recording] You sent for me, sir?
- John Beresford Tipton: Mike, you see I've been making a marriage here tonight.
- Michael Anthony: A marriage, sir?
- John Beresford Tipton: [Chuckles] Of words and music. Listen to the music, Mike. "Romeo and Juliet", Tchaikovsky's music.
- Michael Anthony: Very beautiful, sir.
- John Beresford Tipton: An immortal love story, Mike, Romeo and Juliet. Today they'd be called teenagers. I wonder what would happen if the Romeo and Juliet story were told again in our time.
- [Tipton hands envelope to Anthony]
- John Beresford Tipton: Mike, I want you to deliver a million dollars.
- [Anthony smiles]
- Michael Anthony: [Anthony rings the doorbell and Grandpa Costello responds, just as he is on his way out the door] Good afternoon. Is this the home of Mrs. Burton Costello?
- Grandpa Costello: It is.
- [Calling to Jane in the next room]
- Grandpa Costello: There's a handsome, slicked-up young feller to see you, Janie.
- [Grandpa leaves the house]
- Grandpa Costello: Come in.
- Michael Anthony: [Anthony enters] Mrs. Costello, my name is Michael Anthony.
- Jane Costello: Yes, Mr. Anthony?
- Michael Anthony: I'm here on a highly confidential matter that can be only divulged to yourself, as the recipient, and your husband.
- Jane Costello: Well, I'm sorry, my husband isn't at home.
- [Stops]
- Jane Costello: Recipient, did you say?
- Michael Anthony: This will come as a shock to you, but an extremely peasant one.
- Jane Costello: Well, please sit down, Mr. Anthony.
- [They sit]
- Jane Costello: You can speak freely, I assure you. My daughter is at home; she's in her room.
- Michael Anthony: Oh, not at school?
- [Anthony has removed a check from his briefcase]
- Jane Costello: Julie is seventeen. It's a difficult age - for the child and for the parent.
- Michael Anthony: There might be some solution in this, Mrs. Costello.
- [Anthony presents the check to Jane]
- Jane Costello: [Stares a check] A million dollars? I don't know what...
- Michael Anthony: It's yours, Mrs. Costello, but there are certain stipulations. You can tell no one but your husband where you got the money, or how much. If you do reveal the source, I will be forced to reclaim whatever is left on behalf of the donor.
- [Displaying a document]
- Michael Anthony: Now if you will, uh, sign here.
- Jane Costello: Of course.
- [Signs the pledge]
- Michael Anthony: Thank you
- [Returns the paper to his briefcase]
- Jane Costello: This could solve our future problems. Isn't that what you have children for, Mr. Anthony - the future?
- Michael Anthony: [Turning serious] Perhaps, Mrs. Costello, but money does not always solve problems of the heart.
- Michael Anthony: [Reviewing a case history folder, to the viewers] The woman Mr. Tipton chose to be his new millionaire was Mrs. Jane Costello, who shared a problem with a lot of other women in this world. She was worried about the conduct of her 17-year-old daughter.
- [first lines]
- Michael Anthony: [to the viewers] My name is Michael Anthony. Until his death some years ago, I was executive secretary to a man who was not only remarkably wealthy, but just as remarkably perceptive and human. John Beresford Tipton was a multibillionaire, a man of many interests and hobbies, whose chief avocation, and an endearing one, was millionaires - creating them. Here at Silverstone, his 60,000-acre estate, John Beresford Tipton lived, planned, and pursued his many interests. Here one night, he asked me to come to his library.
