Roy Gordon: Andrew V. McMahon

Quotes

  • Sam Donovan : [Donovan and his fiancée Jane Johnson are visiting banker McMahon later]  Now look, Mr. McMahon, all my life I've known exactly how much money is in my pocket. So please do me this favor.

[Indicating several piles of bills on McMahon's desk]

Sam Donovan : Fill her up!

    Mr. McMahon : What?

Sam Donovan : I don't want to know how much is in there. The places we're going, the shopping we're going to do! Just charge it to my account. Fill her up!

Mr. McMahon : With money. Yes, of course.

[McMahon grabs a pile of bills and fills Donovan's right coat pocket, then another pile and stuffs it into Donovan's left coat pocket, and finally places a third pile into Donovan's inside suit pocket]

Sam Donovan : I'm not going to count it today, not even once. But if I put my hand into my pocket and there isn't any money...

Mr. McMahon : Don't you worry, young man. That'll handle the situation.

Sam Donovan : [to Janet]  You wait here. I'll go get my car.

Janet : It' so silly, now that we have a car, we don't have a place to park it. So we now have to walk twice as far as when we rode the bus.

Sam Donovan : [Gently to Janet]  Oh, be quiet. If you ride the bus, you can't honk your horn. Just a second, wait till you hear it, Mr. McMahon.

    [Donovan leaves the office]

Mr. McMahon : Well, I've just heard a blast or two from it already.

Janet : He just bought that parking lot next door so we'll have a place to park when he visits here.

Mr. McMahon : What? Why that piece of property has been losing money for years and years.

Janet : That's it. He just doesn't care. Like the movie theater he bought so he doesn't have to stand in line. Then he can tell them what time to run the second feature.

Mr. McMahon : I wish I could help in some way.

Janet : Money just can't be the root of all happiness.

Mr. McMahon : What about those friends of your aunt's I've heard you talk about? Can't they do anything?

Janet : They're my last hope!

Mr. McMahon : I hope one of them is a doctor.

Janet : He is. The other is Judge Magruder.

Mr. McMahon : Good, good. He's a fine man on investments.

Janet : I only hope we can save him in time.

  • Michael Anthony : [Voiceover. Donovan is in the office of Bank President Andrew V. McMahon]  The next day, Sam Donovan went to the bank to respond to our letter. There, Mr. McMahon explained the details of the gift.

Sam Donovan : [Somewhat in shock]  I think I'd like a glass of water.

Mr. McMahon : [Pouring a glass for Donovan as he continues the explanation. He hands the glass to Donovan]  There. You've signed all the cards?

    Sam Donovan : Yes, sir.

Mr. McMahon : Now just remember, if you tell anyone where you got this million dollars or the exact amount, the bank will reclaim what's left on behalf of the donor. Oh, yes, you'll find it's quite a responsibility having a million dollars, young man.

Sam Donovan : [Since his pen leaked when he signed the bank's required cards]  I'm sorry, my pen leaked. Thank you for the water.

[Donovan leaves the banker's office in a daze]

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters menagerie on the estate here he discovers Tipton sitting before a small cage containing a squirrel playing on a wheel. Only Tipton's hands are visible to the viewers]  You sent for me, sir?

Mr. McMahon : Oh, Mike, you startled him!

Michael Anthony : I'm very sorry. I sure wouldn't want to think of hurting the little fellow.

Mr. McMahon : Oh, he's not really afraid of you. He just doesn't have any confidence in himself. Undecided, a worrier, born to worry,

[Tipton chuckles, then hands an envelope to Anthony]

Mr. McMahon : like our new millionaire.
